The Challenge
The goal of this project was to transform a dark builder grade kitchen into a brighter, more elegant Modern French dream kitchen with open shelving, wine storage, and a Farmhouse sink.
The Solution
Because this home was relatively new, the cabinetry and appliances were in excellent condition. The layout also worked well. As a result, we focused on integrating open shelving/wine storage, changing the color scheme and lighting, and selecting new finishes and some key appliances.
Specifically, we knew we wanted a show stopping copper range hood that would reflect the Modern French style. We removed the cabinetry to the left and right of the hood and added open shelving for everyday dishes and glassware. Because we wanted the wine storage to be included in the focal point of this kitchen (range hood/open shelving) we chose to install custom made wine cabinets on either side of the cabinetry next to the open shelving. To further accentuate this focal point wall, we installed polished white subway tile in a herringbone pattern all the way to the ceiling.
To lighten up this dark kitchen, we decided to leave the lower cabinetry in the original espresso finish and paint the upper cabinets in Benjamin Moore’s Simply White. We also chose a white quartz countertop with a light, understated marble pattern. These two changes made a significant difference in how light and open this kitchen now feels.
To further brighten this kitchen, and because lighting is another excellent opportunity to reinforce a particular style, we chose a pair of crystal French Empire chandeliers to hang over the generously sized kitchen island, again, reflecting the Modern French style. We replaced the large format beige tile with a beautiful Brazilian Pecan engineered wood floor to more effectively complement the dark espresso base cabinetry.
Finally, to avoid additional costs to install a Farmhouse sink, which needs a lower base cabinet to accommodate the increased sink height, we chose the Kohler Whitehaven Self-Trimming Sink with a Short Apron so it could be installed in the existing base cabinet. A new traditional style faucet completed the look!
